Cancun has been chosen ahead of Baku and Beirut to host the World Taekwondo Championships, which will take place later this year.

Wuxi had planned to host the event in 2021, however COVID-19 constraints prompted a postponement, and the Chinese city eventually relinquished hosting rights.

At an unusual meeting of the World Taekwondo Council, Cancun, Mexico’s beachfront city, beat off competition from Azerbaijan and Lebanon to win the title of World Taekwondo’s flagship event.

Following the bidders’ presentations, Cancun received 52% of the vote.

Sarajevo was also given the 2023 World Taekwondo Cadet Championships by the Council, which also voted to revive World Taekwondo tournaments.

Ninety-two percent of bidders preferred Sarajevo to Queretaro, Mexico.

The World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships are still scheduled to take place in Goyang, South Korea, between April 21 and 24.

World Taekwondo has set online poomsae challenges to keep young athletes interested in the sport since the pandemic began, but it is eager to see in-person competition return.

Choue declared that there will be brand-new World Taekwondo Children’s Championships.

Amendments to competition rules were also agreed, with the goal of fostering “more dynamic and entertaining competitions.”

The Council’s next exceptional meeting will take place in Goyang, under a hybrid format, in conjunction with the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.
